The festival commenced on December 27, 2025, with the launch at the Gram Panchayat (GP) level. Block-level celebrations began on January 7, 2026. The official inauguration of the festival will take place on January 14th, following the Mashaal Yatra in Bhawanipatna.

Ghumura Mahostav 1997 : The Eventful Beginning

“Ghumura Mahostav” as was known when launched almost 3 decades prior, in 1997, was part of a Protocal on Culture, formulated by the then Government of Odisha.No doubt, the then Collector, Kalahandi, spearheaded the conceptualization and realization of such a Mahostav.But he was not the sole pioneer, as a handful of intellectuals and others played the role of a thinking tank behind.The “Kala Jharan”, the index of Kalahandi Utsav, is the brain child of these intellectuals.

This time the Kalahandi Utsav Committee has gone an extra mile to make Kalahandi Utsav Ghumura not merely audible, yet live to the global community.After much deliberation and insight, the Committee has innovatively devised of a website for the minute detail updation of the Utsav.This will surely make our rich legacy of folk culture known and seen at an international scenario.Moreover, the website will provide the community of Non-Resident Indians and Indian Diaspora elsewhere on globe a viable platform to relive the glory of folk culture, and Kalahandi’s art, culture and tradition as a whole.
